The big complaint i heard about choose your own adventure comics was that they limited your choices. Several people were saying that you were not truly choosing your own adventure, since your choices were limited by the structure of the story.
But some for m of structure is necessary for it to be a narrative. the only real way to truly create your own adventure, is to live one or act one out. Whether you are acting one out as a LARP or as a kid having fun, there still is no specific structure to follow. The structure is more or less required however for a story, as it requires a beginning and conclusion. Many acted out adventures we came up with as children never had an ending though. This goes from Calvins epic adventures as "Spaceman Spiff" to my friend Jimmy, who is a high school graduate who still comes down with the impulse to pretend to be a lwn gnome named "King Googalagour" (gougalagour is that is sounds like when you screw up a gollum impersonation). When you act out a real adventure, there is a structure, since it is reality, however it is not as set or easy to follow as that of a narrative. This means that one might never know or understand the conclusion of whatever adventure is happening.
The fact is that while the choose your own adventures are very limiting because of the structure, it is necessary for it to be a narrative. without it we might not be able to ever finish the narrative.
