The Unique Medium of Video Games

Oct 21 2009

Previous blogs have pointed out that when playing a video game, the narrative of the game (if it is even there in the first place) is often times unrelated to your enjoyment of it. I would like to elaborate on that by suggesting that video games are the only form of narrative where the medium of the story can still be entertaining even though the person playing the game has completely disregarded the narrative that the medium presents. Classic games, such as Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City, are horrible as far as the plot goes (Michael Jordan goes to practice with his teammates only to find that they have been kidnapped and he has to search sketchy appartments in Chicago, in a platformer style game no less, in order to save them, killing badguys with basketballs along the way) are quite enjoyable as video games once you disregard the terrible plot.  Even games with quite complex narratives, such as Fallout 3, give you the option to skip dialogue by pressing the "A" button, or something to that extent, effectively allowing you ignore anything developing a plot while still enabling you to go around killing people and stealing things.  Most of the time, when someone brings up a video game because of how awesome it is, rarely do they talk about the complexity of plot.  Instead about the aspects of gameplay that make the game fun to play, for example: Gears of War has a complex little background story behind it, but no one plays the game for that.  People play Gears of War because it has a weapon in it with a chainsaw bayonette attached to it that turns your enemies into a bloodied mess if you can get close enough to them with it.  So while the story of a video game might entice you to finish the game to see how it all turns out, your enjoyment of the game isnt necessairly based on how well thought out the plot is or how well you followed it.  It is possible that you could enjoy the plot of the video game more than the actual gameplay, however, I have never met someone who has claimed such.  In any case, video games are unique in that the elements of the video game are usually what determines how much you like the game, not necessairily the story it is telling.
